Flaxseed responses rate second serving

... One 80-year-old reader shared with me his recipe for a homemade health shake that he has for breakfast most mornings.

Blend a heaping teaspoon whey with 2 rounded teaspoons of ground flaxseed, 11/2 squares of 99 percent cocoa, a banana, some instant coffee powder, cinnamon, ice, a little water, saccharin and nine almonds with their hulls.

You can add more or less coffee, water, cinnamon, saccharin or sugar substitute, depending on your taste.

This gentleman wondered about the amount of flaxseed to be eaten in a day.

From the research I did, it appears there is no set amount, but working up to a tablespoon per day seems to reap many health benefits.

Many folks add ground flaxseed into their bowl of cereal, or mix it into yogurt, or main dishes like casseroles.

The main thing is to start slowly, with about a teaspoon or so and increase it to a tablespoon over the course of a couple of weeks.

Too much initially may cause some gastrointestinal distress.
