...David Bentley, an accredited Australian Association of Exercise and Sport Science physiologist, has started testing Lact-Away, which has been passed by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority.

A double blind trial on 20 top cyclists showed a 10 per cent to 15 per cent improvement in endurance for those riding to fatigue.

Bentley hopes to publish a paper on his cycling trial soon.

He said similar rates of improvement had been found with seven weightlifters in resistance exercises.

"I had my reservations when [Davies and Davidson] first approached me to do trials," he said.

"It's claimed that it has all these different properties and you get the impression that it does everything but there is enough evidence to suggest that it really does.

"There will be sceptics who say you just can't get as much improvement as shown in the cycling trial, but these guys are decent cyclists, and these were the results returned.

"The results suggest that taken two to three hours before heavy exercise, it improves performance.

Short-duration, high-intensity performance seems to be improved." The drink has some nonplussed, such as players at AFL club Port Adelaide, who said it could not prevent their slump after winning the 2004 premiership.

Others who have used it swear by it.
